Ahmet Dönmez, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde federal devlet için çalışan bir imam. Burada yaşayan Müslüman topluma hizmet veren din adamları ya federal devlet için çalışıyorlar ya da eyalet bazında çalışıyorlar. İmam Ahmet Dönmez federal devlete bağlı çalıştığından tüm eyaletlere hizmet veriyor.
Örneğin Müslüman bir asker dini desteğe ihtiyaç duyduğunda İmam Ahmet Dönmez görvlendiriliyor. Ya da hastanede yatan bir Müslüman, hapishanedeki bir Müslüman ve benzeri şekillerde ihtiyaç duyan tüm Müslümanlar için İmam Ahmet Dönmez destek veriyor.
ABD'de imam olabilmeniz için öncelikle yüksek eğitim ve İngilizce yeterlilik şart. Bunun için gerekli başvuruları yaptıktan sonra birkaç sınava girip lisansınızı alabilirsiniz.
ABD'de dini özgürlüklere ve kişisel haklara çok fazla saygı duyulduğunu belirten Dönmez, burada Müslümanların Ramazan aylarında camilerde iftar yemekleri verdiğini anlattı. Bayramlarda da bayram namazından sonra camilerin bahçelerinde bayramlaşma etkinlikleri düzenleniyor. Çocuklar için oyun alanları kurulup yemekler ikram ediliyor. Böylelikle Müslüman toplum kaynaşmış oluyor.
Eğer caminin bahçesi yetersiz geliyorsa belediyelerden parkları kullanmak için izin alınabiliyor ve halka açık büyük parklarda toplu halde bayramlaşma etkinlikleri düzenleniyor. Camiler de küçük olduğundan bayram namazları birkaç postada kılınıyor.
Yani gurbette yaşayan Müslüman toplum ABD'de dinini çok rahat yaşayabiliyor. Özellikle 11 Eylül saldırılarından sonra oluşan İslamafobik saldırılar nedeniyle ABD yönetimi, camiler talep ettiği takdirde kapılarda polis tutarak güvenlik sağlıyor.
Dönmez, özellikle New York ve New Jersey eyaletlerinde yakın zamanda yaşayan nüfusun yarıdan fazlasının Müslüman olacağını ve Müslüman nüfusun artık azınlık değil çoğunluk olacağını öngördüklerini belirtti.
ABD'de Müslümanların yoğunluklu yaşadığı bölgelerde ezan, tıpkı Türkiye'de olduğu gibi hoparlör ile 5 vakit sesli okunabiliyor. Sadece Türkler değil pekçok Müslüman ülkeden göçmenler bu ülkeye yerleşmiş durumda. Bunun için belediyelere yapılan başvurulardan sonra belediye yönetimi mahalle halkına danışarak onay alıyor. Çoğunluk kabul ederse o mahallede ezan sesli okunabiliyor.
Bunun dışında dini bayramlar ve hatta milli bayramlarda tatil olması için okul ve belediye yönetimlerine yapılan başvurular neticesinde 23 Nisan gibi özel günler resmileşip tatil ilan edilebiliyor.
Okullarda helal gıda çıkarılması için de girişimlerde bulunan Dönmez, Amerikalı çalışanların son derece saygılı olduğunu belirtti. Verdikleri eğitimler neticesinde çok anlamasalar da domuz etine dokunduktan sonra helal ete dokunmadan ellerini yıkadıklarını anlattı.
Önemli bir husus da gurbette vefat etmek! Dönmez, hastanede yatıp hiç yakını olmayan ve birikimi de olmayanlar için önemli bir uyarıda bulundu! En azından tanıdığınız birinin numarasını ve adını hastane yetkililerine verin. Çünkü ölüm gerçekleşirse bu kişiler hiçbir dini vecibe gerçekleştirilmeden ya kimsesizler mezarlığına defnediliyor ya da yakılarak külleri bir yere kaldırılıyor.
Oysa İmam Ahmet Dönmez gibi güvenilir din adamları aracılığıyla oluştrulan yardımlar sayesinde bir gün bile dolmadan cenazelerin Türkiye'ye nakledilmesi için gerekli meblağlar toplanabiliyor. Türk halkı bu konuda çok büyük dayanışma içinde.

Dönmez, who says that there is great respect for religious freedoms and personal rights in the US, explains that during the month of Ramadan, Muslims in the US hold iftar dinners in mosques. After Eid prayers, there are also gatherings in mosque gardens for activities such as games for children and meals. This way, the Muslim community comes together.
If the mosque's garden is not sufficient, permission can be obtained from the municipalities to use the parks, and public parks are used for collective Eid gatherings. Since mosques are small, Eid prayers are held in several shifts.
In short, Muslims living abroad can practice their religion comfortably in the US. Especially after the Islamophobic attacks following the September 11 attacks, the US government provides security by stationing police officers at the entrance of mosques when requested.
Dönmez stated that in the near future, more than half of the population in New York and New Jersey states will be Muslim, and the Muslim population will no longer be a minority but a majority.
In areas where Muslims live in the US, the call to prayer can be heard five times a day through loudspeakers, just as it is in Turkey. Immigrants from many Muslim countries have settled in the US, not just Turks. After applications are made to the municipalities and neighborhood residents are consulted, if the majority accepts, the call to prayer can be heard in that neighborhood.
In addition, applications made to school and municipal authorities for religious and even national holidays to be declared as official holidays can result in special days such as April 23 becoming official holidays.
Dönmez also launched initiatives for the removal of non-halal food in schools. He stated that American workers are extremely respectful. Although they do not understand much, they wash their hands after touching pork and before touching halal meat due to the education they receive.
An important point is to die while living abroad. Dönmez gave an important warning for those who are hospitalized, have no relatives, and have no savings. He advised to at least give the name and number of someone you know to hospital officials. If death occurs, these people are either buried in a cemetery for the homeless or their ashes are taken somewhere without performing any religious duties.
Thanks to the aid provided through trusted religious leaders like Imam Ahmet Dönmez, however, the funerals of Muslims can be arranged in Turkey in less than a day.
